(Photo by Mike McGinnis/Getty Images)Urban Meyer is no longer the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, a fact that remains a bit weird months after the close to the 2018 college football season. It didn’t take him too long to return to the practice field.Meyer was spotted watching his now-former team at its second spring practice this morning. The national championship winner watched alongside former Buckeyes running back Warren Ball, who played for the team from 2012-15 before a transfer to Akron. To his credit, it doesn’t sound like Meyer got too involved. It is Ryan Day’s team now, and Meyer apparently kept his distance and observed.Hello. Urban Meyer was at Ohio State practice today. He did not have a whistle.— Bill Landis (@BillLandis25) March 8, 2019More, on Urban Meyer’s appearance at Ohio State practice, from Eleven Warriors:As Ryan Day led the Buckeyes through his second practice as a head coach, former head coach and current assistant athletic director Urban Meyer (who was not in attendance during the portion of the first practice that was open to the media) watched from the sidelines. Warren Ball, a former Ohio State running back who is now the academic coordinator for Akron’s football program, watched practice alongside Meyer, who also spent time standing with director of sports performance Mickey Marotti and general manager of football operations Brian Voltolini.Meyer was not involved in the practice beyond watching from the sidelines.Day, of course, isn’t totally new to leading the team as head coach.Last year, when Meyer was out serving his suspension for the Zach Smith situation, Day was the interim head coach and led the Buckeyes to an undefeated start to the season. He was also key in developing Dwayne Haskins into a projected top 10 pick in one year as starter.Meyer has a role at the school, and will probably give Day advice along the way, but it sounds like he’ll let his former assistant find his own way on the gridiron itself.[Eleven Warriors]last_img read more
