first_imgOn Sunday, he’s known as Denny Hamlin, driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. But on Wednesday evenings, he trades his fire suit and helmet for a pair of crisp Jordan XXXIs and a black basketball jersey with “James D” printed on the back. He’s just Denny, the multi-faceted baller for the third-seeded Walnutz in the Hoop Group league.•   •   •The Hoop Group is a five-team basketball league that Hamlin started last year. Games are played at the indoor “Sun Energy Arena” court … located in Hamlin’s North Carolina home. Tonight is special for this group of pickup basketball players, as it marks the second round of playoffs when the four best teams will face off for a spot in the championship game. The team rosters list an eclectic mix of drivers — like Austin Dillon, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Ryan Blaney, Ty Dillon and Kasey Kahne — media personnel ranging from Rick Allen to Michael Waltrip, and simply friends such as Ron Herbert, who owns Red Rocks Café.“I used to play in a Birkdale (local) basketball league and then I moved and I had an outdoor court and that was fun for like two months of the year when the weather was good — it was either too hot or too cold, usually,” Hamlin says Wednesday night ahead of the playoff games. “And then I decided I wanted to build my own house, it was high on my priority list was to have a full indoor court and eventually I wanted to move the Birkdale basketball league to here, but instead we just started our own league.“The group just got bigger and bigger and next thing you know, we’re up to 30 guys that want to play on a weekly basis. Of course, things get competitive within the league, it continues to grow — next season we’re going to go to a sixth team and have bye weeks for guys.”Like NBA games, there are black-and-white-striped-clad referees, a large digital scoreboard and stat keepers at every game. Hamlin’s 4-year-old daughter Taylor even runs onto the court Wednesday night dressed in a navy cheerleading uniform for a “halftime performance.”And just like the NBA, there’s also a draft before each season.“There (are) 30 different players that were eligible in the draft,” Hamlin explains. “We have five teams, six players per team. So you get drafted on a team and we set up matchups each week. Each team plays (every other) team one time during the regular season, and then you seed them based on the record for the playoffs.”•   •   •Now, that second round of playoffs has arrived; Seeds 1 and 4 will square off twice and Seeds 2 and 3 will play two games, with a third game being possible if either split the pair of matchups. An hour before the first game’s tipoff, many players begin to trickle onto the court:Fresh off his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series win at Talladega Superspeedway, Stenhouse Jr. is one of the first to arrive. Along with fellow Monster Energy Series driver Ty Dillon, he is a part of Hamlin’s Walnutz team. The Walnutz are facing the second-seeded GFY team in the first game, so Stenhouse begins warming up by shooting baskets.“We play hard defense,” Stenhouse tells NASCAR.com of his team. “We probably play harder defense than we race each other on the race track. This is all bragging rights. Denny and I are on the same team and then you’ve got Blaney and Austin Dillon on different teams, so I generally guard one of them and we play tough defense. We run each other around, wear each other out, so it’s fun.”It would appear so. During the night’s first game Ty Dillon makes an aggressive lunge for the ball and smacks hard into the wall, leaving a large hole.“I’m kind of a bull in a china shop sometimes,” Dillon tells NASCAR.com afterward with a sheepish smile. “I guess rubbin’s racin’? Or rubbin’s basketball.”For Dillon, who says he was moved to an opening on Hamlin’s team a few weeks ago from what he refers to as the “D-Leagues,” playing in the Hoop Group has given him the opportunity to interact with other race car drivers outside the race track.“For me being a (Monster Energy Series) rookie, it’s nice to get to know these guys away from the track and create those relationships,” Dillon says. “I’ve known Bubba (Wallace) and Ryan (Blaney) my whole life, my whole career. But to get know Denny and Ricky and some of the guys, just create different relationships away from the race track has been nice.”•   •   •Game 1: Hamlin’s Walnutz defeat GFY using some hard defense (and one damaged wall). Now, it’s time for the first game between the fourth-ranked Wisemen and the No. 1 Shockers. But the Wisemen seem to be down one player as the game tips off.“There he is,” Hamlin says five minutes into the game. “I think I saw a head.”Point guard Austin Dillon jogs into the arena in street clothes, having just landed from a test at Kentucky Speedway minutes prior.“How’s he not dressed?” Hamlin says.Dillon quickly changes into his uniform and joins his team on the court. The 27-year-old driver records a combined 31 points throughout both his games, the most among all the players that night. Dillon’s young age gives him several advantages on the basketball court, Hamlin says.“It usually goes in order of age,”  Hamlin says on the best players. “Austin Dillon, Ryan Blaney — the young guys. They have a lot of stamina and they’re really fast. So they’re really good players.”Another guy who shows some speed? Darrell Wallace Jr., who is part of the top-seeded Shockers team that ultimately won both of Wednesday night’s games against the Wisemen and to advance to the championship.“I made some baskets I was pretty pumped about that,” Wallace said of his performance.“It’s tough, everyone here is playing their heart out,”  he continued. “We’ve got real refs, that shows you how intense the competition is … I’m such a huge competitor with myself, so I get pissed off at myself when I shoot bad or play bad defense … I try to stay out of all the drama on the court — it’s a little too much, we all have real day jobs. But all of us are out here to have fun, score a couple baskets and hopefully win the title.”•   •   •As the sun sets on Lake Norman behind the glass wall, the intensity certainly seemed to ramp up: There are a few questions thrown toward the refs on calls, a couple of frustrated remarks at other team members and plenty of sweat being dripped onto Hamlin’s court.“This is some intense basketball action here at the Hamlin arena,” Michael Waltrip says.Ultimately, Hamlin’s Walnutz lose the tie-breaking third game, giving second-seeded GFY a spot in the championship game, along with the No. 1 Shockers. They’ll compete for a big gold trophy that Hamlin designs each year — and “bragging rights,” as Stenhouse says.Because when it comes down to it, pickup basketball is plenty of fun, but these drivers never stop competing.“All of the reason we do it is we’re all competitors, whether it’s on a golf course or a basketball court and we just kind of have a place now to do it,” Hamlin says. “For me, it helps with exercise — I’ll never be one of those guys that puts on their running shoes and goes for a 5K run or a 10-mile run, or I’ll never get on Jimmie Johnson’s bike and pedal for 50 miles, but I’ll go on the basketball court and work out. And we’ve seen some of the data — it’s about 6.5 miles of running on game night. So, it’s a good run, but out on the street, I just can’t do it.“As long as I have a ball in my hand, I can go.”last_img read more

Mobius photo.Vermont Business Magazine Mobius convened the 2017 Vermont Mentoring Symposium at the State Offices Complex in Waterbury on Tuesday, May 9. This statewide event brought together more than 60 youth mentoring program staff, board members, and supporters from across Vermont for a day of networking and professional development. In addition to the workshops and networking activities, the event featured appearances from US Congressman Peter Welch, field representatives Diane Derby and Katarina Lisaius from the offices of Senators Patrick Leahy and Bernie Sanders, Secretary of Education Rebecca Holcombe, and Commissioner of the Department for Children and Families (DCF) Ken Schatz. Congressman Welch thanked mentoring program staff for the work they do, and praised mentoring as playing a critical role in supporting the health and well-being of young people, and helping to build closer ties between Vermonters of all ages. “Giving of ourselves to our community makes us all better,” said Welch. Derby spoke about Senator Leahy’s many years of support for mentoring in Vermont, and recent efforts with Mobius and Senator Sanders’ office to try to bring federal funding for mentoring back into the state. Lisaius discussed Senator Sanders’ concerns about the low percentage of high school graduates in Vermont who go on to pursue post-secondary education, and the role mentoring programs and mentors play in helping to bridge this gap.Montpelier resident Andrea Stander, a mentor of 17 years, closed out the morning programme by sharing from her experiences as a mentor for multiple mentees through the Girls/Boyz First mentoring program. Secretary Holcombe joined the group later in the afternoon as the facilitator for a mentor/mentee match panel: Marilu Duke and her 17-year-old mentee Melanie McLane (Girls/Boyz First); Karl Bissex and his 14-year-old mentee Jack Roya (Twinfield Together Mentoring); and Rachel McCarthy and her nine-year-old mentee Hayden Roy (Howard Center Community Friends).Holcombe asked each mentor pair a variety of questions about things they learned and experienced over the course of their relationship together, and also touched on different ways that mentoring has played a role, directly or indirectly, in the mentee’s education. Commissioner Schatz gave closing remarks, and shared the importance of mentoring to DCF’s substance abuse prevention efforts. DCF also provided free space for Mobius to host the event. During the afternoon portion of the event, attendees participated in a series of workshops on a variety of topics including trauma-informed mentoring, grantwriting, board development, youth behavioral issues, match support, and working with parents. The Vermont Mentoring Symposium was planned and organized by Mobius and its Program Leadership Council, an advisory group comprised of elected representatives from mentoring programs across the state that advises and assists the organization with its various youth mentoring initiatives. According to the “Mentoring Effect,” a study released in 2014 by MENTOR (The National Mentoring Partnership), one in three youth in Vermont will enter adulthood without having a formal or informal mentoring relationship with a caring adult. The results of national studies by MENTOR and Big Brothers Big Sisters illustrate that a mentor can enhance a young person’s learning skills and help him or her build resiliency and pro-social skills.Youth with mentors are less likely to engage in risky behavior with drugs and alcohol, are more likely to develop positive relationships with peers and adults, and more likely to pursue college and other post-secondary opportunities. Now in its fifth year as Vermont’s Mentoring Partnership, Mobius supports approximately 140 adult-to-youth mentoring program sites that serve 2,300 mentor pairs throughout the state. Mobius awards more than $300,000 to youth mentoring agencies annually through the Vermont Mentoring Grants, which are made possible by support from the A.D. Henderson Foundation, DCF, and the Permanent Fund for Vermont’s Children.Mobius also offers technical support to program staff, maintains an online program directory and referral system for volunteers, manages a quality-based program management database, raises public awareness of mentoring, works with programs to ensure they are meeting best practices, and leads statewide mentoring initiatives. first_imgA dramatic dash along the Nürnberg – Ingolstadt Neubaustrecke on September 2 put a Siemens-built Taurus locomotive in the record books when it touched 357 km/h. Murray Hughes reports,A NEW world record speed for locomotives was set in Germany on September 2. At 16.02 four-axle Taurus locomotive No 1216 050, built by Siemens for Austrian Federal Railways, hauled a single dynamometer car along a section of the Nürnberg – Ingolstadt Neubaustrecke, reaching a maximum speed of 357 km/h near Hilpoltstein. The previous speed record for a locomotive was established over 50 years ago on March 29 1955, when SNCF’s BB9004 attained 331 km/h between Lamothe and Morcenx on the Bordeaux – Dax main line in southwest France. The Class 1216 four-system Taurus loco, decked out in a silver-grey livery, notched up the new record at Hilpoltstein between Allersberg and Kinding, where more than 1 000 photographers and onlookers had gathered to watch the event. Considerable interest was generated by the presence at Kinding station of BB9004 and its fellow 1955 record holder CC7107, which had been hauled specially for the occasion from their home at the Cité du Train museum in Mulhouse. Also present were two other Taurus locomotives, one of which had been built for Slovenian Railways, Dispolok’s Eurosprinter ES 64P001 and DB Co-Co loco E03 001, one of four prototypes built in the 1960s for inter-city service in Germany at 200 km/h.Whereas SNCF had made a number of modifications to the locomotives and coaches to improve the aerodynamics for the 1955 speed trials, only minor changes were made to the Taurus loco, mainly to accommodate measuring equipment. Apart from that and the removal of its windscreen wipers, the loco was a standard product operating under DB AG’s standard high speed 15 kV 16 ²?³e_STnSHz catenary the French locos established their records using a 1·5 kV DC power supply. No 1216 050 is no stranger to speed records. The same locomotive had been used in the Netherlands in January this year to test the track and infrastructure of the HSL-Zuid high speed line. There it set successive Dutch speed records of 258 km/h and 263 km/h before a Thalys trainset scooped the national blue riband with a run at 336·2km/h on March 2.It is worth pointing out that the September 2 record in Germany was a carefully-orchestrated event, there being little doubt that a record would be achieved. Contrast that with the 1955 trials, when the outcome was unknown. Nor should it be forgotten that the French tests left the track in unusable condition, with the rails bent out of alignment by the lateral forces exerted by a hunting bogie. The ballastless track on the Nürnberg – Ingolstadt line was designed from the outset for 300 km/h operation, and as Klaus-Dieter Josel, DB’s Executive Manager in Bayern, said after the event, ‘the new tracks were built as if for a world record’.Two trips were planned for the record attempt. Had a record not been set on either occasion, a third opportunity had been built into the day’s timetable. Plans had also been laid to postpone the record attempt in the event of bad weather, but happily this proved unnecessary. The whole event was staged without interrupting DB AG’s normal service on the route, which is admittedly rather sparse with an ICE service every 2 h in each direction. More ICEs will be added in December to provide a 30 min interval service, together with ‘local’ trains running at 200 km/h and calling at intermediate stations between Ingolstadt and Nürnberg (RG 9.06 p558).Many guests had arrived at Kinding by a special ICE service from München, with others travelling by bus from Nürnberg. Formal presentations were followed by the locomotive being named Kinding-Altmühltal by the Mayor of Kinding, Rita Böhm. Visitors were then taken by bus to the motorway service area at Hilpoltstein, where they were able to take up position at the lineside to observe the record-breaker.The first attempt planned for 14.20 was delayed for around half an hour by a technical problem with a pantograph sensor, but once this had been dealt with the locomotive was accelerated up to 344 km/h, beating the 1955 record by 13 km/h and exceeding the 330 km/h which the Taurus had reached during a dummy run the previous week. The second trip secured the new record of 357 km/h, this speed being sustained for about 4 min. On arrival in Allersberg, the figure was quickly affixed in large yellow figures to the front and side of the loco ready for display to photographers at Kinding. As many as 32 people were on board the record-breaker – six in each cab and 20 in the measurement vehicle.Although the record was established on infrastructure owned by DB AG, Germany’s national railway was not the operator as the locomotive is owned by Austrian Federal Railways. Dispolok, which belongs to Siemens and holds the necessary operating and safety licences, could have been allocated this role. However, the IGE company (Internationale Gesellschaft für Eisenbahnverkehr), a specialist rail tour business based at Hersbruck near Nürnberg, was designated as operator for the record attempt, and thus shares the title with DB, ÖBB and Siemens.DB Netz and DB Energie were closely in-volved in preparations for the event, and DB Systemtechnik provided the dynamometer car that was used to measure the speed and numerous other parameters. Altogether there were 21 sponsors, whose logos were displayed on the sides of the loco.Several individuals were instrumental in the record attempt. Notable among these was Axel Dworaczek of Dispolok, who shared the project management task with his Siemens colleague J Schurig. Dworaczek was in the driving seat, both metaphorically and literally – he was at the controls of No 1216 050 on the record-breaking run.CAPTION: ÖBB Taurus loco 1216-050 shared the glory at Kinding with French record-breaking locomotives BB9004 and CC7107, recalling the daring exploits of 1955 when 331km/h was attained on the Bordeaux – Dax main lineCAPTION: Axel Dworaczek of traction leasing company Dispolok, a Siemens subsidiary, played a key role in organising and staging the recordlast_img read more

first_img SHARE SHARE EMAIL March 24, 2019 × COMMENT Delhi Capitals batsman Rishab Pant plays a shot during an IPL T-20 match against Mumbai Indian’s in Mumbai   –  PTI SHARE cricket Delhi Capitals batsman Rishab Pant plays a shot during an IPL T-20 match against Mumbai Indian’s in Mumbai   –  PTI COMMENTS Rishabh Pant’s utterly destructive 78 powered Delhi Capitals to a 37-run win over Mumbai Indians in the IPL here on Sunday, giving further proof of why he should be on the World Cup-bound plane to England.Pant got those runs in only 27 balls and while the relentless onslaught would do his confidence a world of good, Jasprit Bumrah’s shoulder injury two months before the ICC showpiece left the Indian cricket fraternity on tenterhooks. The Delhi dazzler’s seven towering sixes and as many fours at a Wankhede Stadium that was made to look like a tiny ground left the Mumbai Indians bowlers, including the world’s best pacer Jasprit Bumrah, traumatised and gave rechristened Delhi Capitals the fresh beginning they longed for.Sent into bat, Delhi Capitals notched up an imposing 213 for six in the stipulated 20 overs, and buried under a pile of runs, there was not much of a riposte from the hosts, who were stopped at 176 in 19.2 overs after an injured Bumrah failed to show up with the willow.Such was the 21-year-old Pant’s assault that Delhi raked in 99 runs in the last six overs. Pant smashed the world’s best fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, for a few sixes as well.Pant, playing his natural game, mercilessly punished the Mumbai bowlers after South African Colin Ingram (47 off 32 balls 7×4, 1×6) and Shikhar Dhawan (43 off 36 balls; 4×4; 1×6) pulled the visitors out of the rubble and laid the foundation of a big total with their 83-run stand for the third wicket. The young wicketkeeper was brutal on Hardik Pandya, whom he hammered for two sixes and a four in the 16th over to start the destruction and then spared none. He struck two sixes and a four off debutant Rasikh Salam in the 19th over.Pant was also brutal on death overs specialist Bumrah. Rahul Tewatia complimented the stumper with 9 not out.Earlier, the duo of Dhawan and Ingram rallied the Delhi innings after they lost two quick wickets — Prithvi Shaw (7) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (16) — inside the first four overs,  and also took the Mumbai attack to cleansers. Ingram upped the ante in the eighth over slashing Hardik for a four and then a six.But Ben Cutting gave Mumbai the much-needed breakthrough as he removed Ingram, who was caught by Hardik in the 13 over. Dhawan also threw his wicket away as Delhi slumped from 112 for two to 131 for four. But then it was the Pant show.Later, barring veteran Yuvraj Singh (53 off 35 balls; 5×4 and 3×6), who made his first appearance for Mumbai, no other batsman stood tall. Yuvraj did roll back the years, with his fluent hitting, but his knock went in vain. Kasigo Rabada (2-23) removed Yuvraj in the 19th over to seal the victory for his team.Chasing 214, Mumbai Indians were never in the fray. They lost skipper Rohit Sharma (14) and Suryakumar Yadav (2) early.Quinton De Kock (27) hammered Trent Boult for two fours and a six in the third over and then found momentum in the sixth over as he hit two consecutive fours off Ishant Sharma. But Ishant (2-34) took revenge as De Kock holed to fine leg where Boult took a good catch as Mumbai slumped to 45-3.But then West Indian Kieron Pollard (21) and Yuvraj tried to resurrect the innings with their 50-run stand. Pollard hammered Rahul Tewatia for a six and a four, while Yuvraj stuck two fours and a six in the 1oth over off Axar Patel as Mumbai amassed 20 runs.As the two were looking good, Keemo Paul removed Pollard. Hardik Pandya (o) followed suit as Mumbai lost half the side on 95. After Krunal Pandya (32 off 15 balls) departed, Mumbai’s hopes were solely pinned on Yuvraj and he could not take the side home.
