O’Dempsey’s 1-8  Colt 2-4Laois GAA JFC ‘B’ Final ReplayIt is rare that you find two teams that are so evenly matched but the 2009 Junior ‘B’ football final managed to provide us with that rarity. O’Dempsey’s and Colt, one footballing stronghold with the other known more for it’s hurling exploits, went to battle in what will be one of most memorable lower grade finals in a long time.Following a scrappy final which saw O’Dempsey’s land a last minute free make sure O’Dempsey’s lived to fight another day, the two teams met a week later in Timahoe and there was huge anticipation for another classic. Not only were the two games very tight but the scripts played out very much the same way. As they did in the first game, O’Dempsey’s had a last minute free to decide the game, only this time it was to win the game and claim the Junior ‘B’ title.Mark McCormack was the man of the hour, who kicked the winning free to bury the pain of the previous three years having been forced to a replay in 2006 against Mountmellick and 2007 against Ballylinan, losing both. The game, was as previously mentioned, panned out much like the initial encounter, with Colt bursting out of the block, causing serious havoc but inevitably were unable to sustain that level of intensity and O’Dempsey’s reeled them in.It was the hero Mark McCormack who rattled home an O’Dempsey’s goal which seemed to spring the Killenard club back into life. Colt responded with goal but it didn’t seem to stop O’Dempsey’s momentum, and Barry Kelly was very impressive from the dead ball to keep the scores coming. Two more points from Barry Kelly and Rory Bracken leveled the game, after Colt’s standout player, Eddie Dunne sent a goal bound effort smashing off the post. With time almost up, the game look destined for another draw. Not quite! A free was won around 55 yards out from goal, and Mark McCormack was called upon to try and win the game and he just that with ball a cracking effort, causing serious celebrations and the final whistle wasn’t long following, setting the heartbreak for Colt and the joy for O’Dempsey’s.Scorers – O’Dempsey’s: Barry Kelly 0-5 (0-4 frees), Mark McCormack 1-1 (0-1 free), Rory Bracken 0-2 (0-1 free).
