first_imgAlmost two years after it was agreed in outline, the Department for Transport (DfT) has approved an increase in the weight limit for two-axle coaches and buses, from 18T to 19.5T.The weight increase is not dependent on the fuel type used. Currently, some electric buses in London have special dispensation to run up to the higher limit, which was granted pending the increased.Change comes into force on 1 October; ‘notifiable alteration’ must be madeThe change comes into effect from 1 October, and follows the DfT putting forward the Road Vehicles (Authorised Weight) and Construction and Use (Amendment) Regulations 2017.It brings Great Britain into line with European regulations and reflects that passengers are heavier, along with the additional weight of compulsory items such as wheelchair lifts/ramps, destination and AV equipment and Euro 6 after-treamment systems. The Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) says it is “delighted to learn” of the changes.Operators looking to increase the maximum permitted weight of existing vehicles must submit a notifiable alteration (VTP 5) form to DVSA.The DfT also says they must also obtain a new manufacturer’s plate from the manufacturer, indicating the vehicle can operate at 19.5T. This is checked in the notifiable alteration process.More details at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/road-vehicle-authorised-weight-regulations-2017-amendments/road-vehicles-authorised-weight-and-construction-and-use-amendment-regulations-2017-clarification-overviewlast_img read more

Just as the country’s premier Leszek Miller and Denmark’s Anders Fogh Rasmussen were trying desperately to piece together a last-minute deal acceptable to both the EU and the biggest applicant state, the lady’s mobile rang. The message, she revealed, had nothing to do with the negotiations – but was about curtains she was having made for her house. It certainly gave a new meaning to that phrase ‘the final curtain’.Valéry Giscard d’Estaing seemed on the verge of breaking into a rendition of Je Ne Regrette Rien at Copenhagen. When the chairman of the Convention on Europe’s future was asked by a Turkish hack if he regretted saying 95% of Turks live outside Europe, Giscard replied with a chuckle: “I have nothing to add or retract.” Later, the Frenchman was quizzed about US efforts to secure a firm date for Turkish entry talks: Giscard merely remarked he was glad Washington wasn’t intervening in the work of the Convention.Sounds as though Poland will be taking no prisoners when it becomes a member state. One near-terrified Commission official confessed he felt that the Poles boast the “feelings of superiority of the French, the Euroscepticism of the Brits and the harsh negotiating methods of the Spaniards”. Expect a tough time, then…last_img read more
