1 Tottenham have condemned a banner mocking Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso’s involvement in a crash which led to the death of a young woman. Alonso was at the wheel of a car which crashed in Madrid in 2011, leading to the death of a 19-year-old woman. An image had been circulating on social media following Spurs’ match with Huddersfield at the weekend, but has since been deleted. Spurs have promised to track down and punish those responsible. A Tottenham spokesman told The Times: “This banner is clearly in extremely poor taste and we are investigating the matter. “If found to be a Spurs fan, they will be dealt with accordingly.” The woman suffered head injuries and died soon after arriving at hospital. Alonso’s brother, Miguel, broke three ribs and Jaime Navarro, a former team-mate, broke his collarbone.Alonso was arrested and charged with being over the legal alcohol limit and speeding and was fined £54,000. The image referencing Alonso’s crash was circulated on social media
AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORESurfer attacked by shark near Channel Islands calls rescue a ‘Christmas miracle’The new AP count showed Webb with 1,172,538 votes and Allen with 1,165,302, a difference of 7,236. Virginia has had two statewide vote recounts in modern history, but both resulted in vote changes of no more than a few hundred votes. An adviser to Allen, speaking on condition of anonymity because his boss has not formally decided to end the campaign, said the senator wanted to wait until most canvassing was completed before announcing his decision, possibly as early as this evening. The adviser said Allen was disinclined to request a recount if the final vote spread was similar to that of election night. Moving swiftly to establish himself as the winner, Webb began assembling a transition team hours after he proclaimed victory around 1:30a.m. “The vote’s been counted, and Jim won,” campaign spokeswoman Kristian Denny Todd said. Some absentee ballots remained to be counted, she said, but Webb considers it “a formality more than anything else.” Allen’s campaign, however, said the senator would wait for the completion of a full canvass – that is, a recheck of the numbers by local election officials. By law, it must be done by Tuesday. Lee E. Goodman, chief counsel for the Republican Party of Virginia, said the senator had not decided whether to ask for a recount. There are no automatic recounts in Virginia, but state law allows a candidate who finishes a half-percentage point or less behind to request a recount paid for by state and local governments. Goodman said the GOP was concerned about a number of glitches involving new touch-screen computer voting machines, including power failures and calibration problems. But he said he knew of no fraud. Webb was with family and military buddies Wednesday and did not plan any public appearances. A 60-year-old Naval Academy graduate, novelist and decorated Vietnam veteran who served as Navy secretary under President Reagan, Webb bitterly opposed the war in Iraq and switched to the Democratic Party. He tried to tie Allen to President George W. Bush and the war. Allen, the 54-year-old son of a Hall of Fame pro football coach, is a former governor once popular for abolishing parole, and he had once been expected to cruise to a second term this year as a warm-up for a run for the White House in 2008. Then in August, he mockingly referred to a Webb campaign volunteer of Indian descent as “Macaca,” regarded by some as a racial slur. Allen was also accused of fumbling his response when it became known that his mother’s family was Jewish. Allen was raised Christian. And some former football teammates from the University of Virginia charged that Allen had commonly used a slur for blacks – something he denied. Allen battled back, accusing Webb of denigrating women in a 1979 magazine article decrying the admission of women to the Naval Academy. Allen also tried to portray sexual descriptions in Webb’s six best-selling war novels as demeaning to women. The State Board of Elections is set to meet Nov.27 to certify the results of the statewide canvass. Allen would have 10 days after that to go to court to ask for a recount, which would be overseen by three judges. But Allen “hasn’t made a decision to litigate this at all,” Goodman said.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! RICHMOND, Va. – Democrat Jim Webb won Virginia’s pivotal Senate race Wednesday, unseating Republican George Allen and giving the Democrats total control of Congress for the first time in 12 years. After GOP Sen. Conrad Burns’ loss in Montana, the Virginia contest was the last undecided Senate race in the country. Webb’s victory gave the Democrats 51 Senate seats and majorities in both the House and Senate for the first time since 1994. Control of the Senate hung in the balance for most of Wednesday as Webb clung to an excruciatingly small lead. The Associated Press contacted election officials in all 134 localities where voting occurred, obtaining updated numbers Wednesday. About half the localities said they had completed their post-election canvassing, and nearly all had counted outstanding absentees. Most were expected to be finished by Friday.
Michael Goulian Becomes the First American to Win a USA Red Bull Air Race Stop Since 2008Sunday over 40,000 spectators witnessed racing history as pilot Michael Goulian became the first American to win the Indianapolis stop of the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, currently in its third year at the iconic Motor Speedway. Intense racing action was paired with a beautiful summer-like day, as pilots raced the most technical course of the season, reaching speeds of 230mph while enduring forces of up to 10G as they navigated a low-level slalom track marked by 80-foot-high, air-filled pylons.Master Class pilot Michael Goulian was fighting back tears after a hard-fought victory, especially when he barely made it out of Sunday’s opening round as the fastest loser. Meanwhile, his two remaining rivals for the World Championship, Czech pilot MartinŠonka and Australia’s Matt Hall, stumbled, as American Kirby Chambliss outflew Šonka in the Round of 14, and Hall hit a pylon in the Round of 8. In the Final 4, Goulian was rock solid, delivering a time of 1:06.208 and solidifying the victory. “It’s a big day. Right now, the season doesn’t even mean anything, because to win at Indy is amazing,” said Goulian, his emotion evident as he realized that he would be able to kiss the famous Indy bricks like the Indianapolis 500 heroes of his childhood. “Sometimes the day just works out for you, and today it did. It feels great to win here.”Goulian’s Indianapolis result propelled him back to the top of the standings at 70 points, while Šonka is now second at 65 and Hall holds 63. With only seven total points separating the trio, only one thing is sure – the season finale in Fort Worth, Texas this November will crown a first-time Red Bull Air Race World Champion. In the Challenger Class, American pilot Kevin Coleman was looking for his first win in home skies as he appeared unbeatable, blazing to a Challenger Class track record of 1:09.660. Bergér, who has won the past two overall Challenger Cup titles, knew he had to perform if he was going to have any chance for an overall hat-trick, and perform he did, clocking 1:09.397 to deny Coleman’s dream.Don’t miss the season finale: Tickets are on sale now for the crowning stop of the 2018 Red Bull Air Race season at Texas Motor Speedway on November 117-18. 11 February 2009 South African state spending on education remains its single biggest investment, Finance Minister Trevor Manuel told Parliament in Cape Town on Wednesday. “Trends in performance, both in terms of teaching and learning, show a worrying persistence of the social divisions of the past,” he said. An additional R700-million would be allocated for higher education subsidies and to accommodate anticipated growth in student enrolment from 783 900 in 2008 to 836 800 by 2011. There would also be a strengthening of training colleges and a recapitalisation of technical schools over the next three years, Manuel said. “Ironically, precisely where education is most needed to help break the cycle of poverty is where infrastructure, administrative and teacher capacity are least impressive,” Motlanthe said during the opening of Parliament. The President also raised concerns about the drop-out rate, particularly at secondary and tertiary levels, and challenged the country’s education system to produce the kind of skills needed by society. President Kgalema Motlanthe, in his state of the nation address on Friday, said he was concerned at a trend of schools in rural and impoverished areas lacking infrastructure and capacity. Source: BuaNews The government’s key priorities in education included extending the no-fee school policy from the current 40 percent to 60 percent of schools, expanding the school nutrition programme, reducing average class sizes in schools, serving lower income communities, and increasing expenditure on school buildings. “Education spending has grown by 14 percent a year for the past three years and accounts for R140.4-billion in the spending plans of provinces and national government for 2008/09,” Manuel said during his 2009/10 Budget speech. A further R330-million would go towards to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, while funding was also available for the establishment of a new National Education Evaluation Unit, which would evaluate a new salary dispensation for teachers, linked to school and teacher performance.
Tags: #Facebook#Features#news#NYT#web According to the latest data from Compete, the ’25 Random Things About Me’ meme has not only given us access to a plethora of random facts about people we barely know, but this digital fad has also been good for Facebook. According to the latest data from Compete, four times more people than usual visited the ‘Notes’ section on Facebook in January. Compete estimates that close to 20 million users used ‘Notes’ in January, while only about 4 million used it in October 2008.But it wasn’t just the ‘Notes’ section that profited from this meme. Facebook itself saw its traffic grow by 15% in January, which represents the fourth largest single month increase in visitors to the site. In addition, 60% more profiles were created in January than in December. Related Posts Just this month, Facebook finally surpassed MySpace as the top social networking site in the U.S., and judging from this data some of that surge can be attributed to the 25 Things meme.It would probably be wrong to attribute all of Facebook’s growth to the ’25 Random Things’ meme, but the renewed interest in notes on Facebook is most likely fully attributable to this. Notes on Facebook are basically small blog posts, and represent the only space on the site where you can respond after being tagged to write 25 random things about yourself.Given that the 25 Things meme has now reached both Time Magazine and the New York Times, we assume that this fad is slowly coming to an end, but even so, Facebook has clearly profited from it in the last two months. Michigan is one of the big winners of National Signing Day, landing No. 1 recruit Rashan Gary a few hours ago. That doesn’t impress everyone from the state, however. NBA All-Star and former Michigan State basketball great Draymond Green was tweeted at about Gary by a Michigan fan. In response, he brought up his recruitment, and the fact that former Michigan State running back Le’Veon Bell, now one of the NFL’s top rushers, was a two-star [email protected] yeah I was 127 out of 150 when I left high school and LeVeon bell was a 2 star. That never matters!!!— Draymond Green (@Money23Green) February 3, 2016Green wasn’t the top player in his class back in 2008, but he was a four-star recruit according to most recruiting services. His point about Bell is valid, however. ESPN, Rivals, and Scout all had Bell as a two-star. While schools like Michigan State often do well with diamonds in the rough, most coaches would rather fill their classes with known superstars, and take their chances that way.
Ricky Gervais and Jilly Cooper have spoken out following a BUAV investigation that uncovered the shocking killing of very young puppies and kittens in experiments in a UK laboratory.Undercover video footage taken by the BUAV graphically shows the pitiful plight of these very young animals. In response to the expose by the BUAV, Ricky Gervais stated: ‘I support the BUAV in their investigation to expose this kind of cruelty. This senseless waste of life cannot be justified. Please join me in asking for it to end.’Animal-lover, Jilly Cooper, who has dogs of her own said: ‘It is important that BUAV investigations continue to uncover the horrific reality of animals in laboratories. This senseless, needless suffering is utterly appalling so please take action and join the Our Best Friends campaign.’The BUAV investigation at MSD Animal Health revealed that puppies were separated from their mothers at a very young age, some just over 4 weeks, to be used in tests in contravention of welfare guidelines; the routine killing of puppies from 5 weeks of age and kittens less than 6 months old; the routine killing of healthy female adult beagles once their puppies were taken away from them and a lack of effort to find homes for those adult and puppy beagles who were no longer required or could have been released at the end of the experiments, there is strong support for homing beagles animals from laboratories where possible.During the BUAV investigation, 92 beagle puppies, 10 adult nursing female beagles and at least 15 kittens were killed at the laboratory. After the investigation was published in the Sunday Express on March 2nd, celebrities including Wendy Turner Webster, Kirsty Gallagher and Greg Rutherford took to Twitter to express their horror at how the animals had been treated and their support for the BUAV campaign. The BUAV has launched the Our Best Friends campaign to end the use of thousands of dogs and hundreds of cats in research every year in the UK. Despite widespread public concern about the use of cats and dogs in research, because of the secrecy surrounding animal research very little is known about the suffering they are forced to endure. The BUAV’s revelations about what happens inside one UK laboratory will be especially shocking for the millions of families across the UK who share their homes and lives with cats and dogs.Footage from the investigation can be viewed here or on YouTube. The petition can be found here.

The 1960s were understandably weak — with just two teams in the Elo top 100 — because MLB expanded by eight teams during this span. The 1980s don’t have the same excuse, and the decade’s best squad — the 1986 Mets — rates as only the 62nd-best team ever. The first six seasons of the 2010s were similarly middling; of the teams from those years, the 2011 Phillies rank the highest on the all-time list, at No. 76. –NYY1908New York Highlanders1449136 –OAK1916Philadelphia Athletics14025 One hundred and 10 years ago, the Chicago Cubs ended the regular season with a 116-36 record. That .763 winning percentage is the best in modern baseball history by a comfortable margin, but the Cubs went on to drop the World Series to the White Sox in six games. Might they still be the greatest team in baseball history? We recently calculated historical Elo ratings for every team after every game as part of our Complete History Of MLB interactive graphic. (We’ve done the same for the NBA and NFL.) Elo ratings are one of our preferred metrics at FiveThirtyEight, because their simple inputs make them useful for comparing the relative strengths of teams across the entire history of a league. We can also use Elo to calculate season ratings for every MLB team since 1903, when the first modern World Series was played.1Our interactive goes back a little further, to 1871. The quality of 19th-century baseball teams was pretty uneven — meaning the top teams from that time would dominate historical rankings — so to focus on more recognizable franchises, this piece is looking only at seasons since 1903. We arrived at an overall season rating — what the table below calls “composite” Elo — by blending each team’s peak, average and final Elo for each season. This lets us take into account a team’s highest level of performance, its sustained performance throughout the season and, broadly, how well it did in the postseason.2Elo ratings are carried over from season to season, which means that most of a team’s rating at the start of a season is based on its previous season. This is useful when trying to estimate a team’s quality early on, but for assessing individual seasons, it unfairly dings teams that rose to greatness after a terrible year. For our season calculations, “average” and “peak” Elo calculations start at game 40.So who comes out on top? The 1906 Cubs have the highest peak Elo, but because of their World Series loss, they rate as the second-best team since 1903, behind the 1939 New York Yankees. We ranked all 2,374 team-seasons from 1903 to 2015 — you can explore them below: –MIN1933Washington Senators157774 –NYM1986New York Mets1580✓62 –DET1935Detroit Tigers1585✓43 –OAK1911Philadelphia Athletics1607✓7 –KC1977Kansas City Royals1560213 –CIN1934Cincinnati Reds143669 –TB2002Tampa Bay Devil Rays144296 –TEX2011Texas Rangers1568141 GRAPHIC: We calculated Elo ratings after every game in MLB history — more than 400,000 ratings in total. If you scan through the top of the list, you’ll notice that most of the best seasons since 1903 happened more than 50 years ago — in fact, 71 of the 100 best seasons fall before 1960. The New York Yankees’ insane dominance in the 1920s, ’30s, ’40s and ’50s is responsible for a lot of this imbalance. ELO1ST YEAR?RANK AMONG WORST TEAMS EVER The 2003 Detroit Tigers lost 119 games, winning five of their last six to avoid the 120-loss modern record set by the 1962 Mets in their first season as a franchise. Elo isn’t fooled, though — the 2003 Tigers had a slightly worse run differential than the 1962 Mets and have a slightly lower rating here. The 1904 Washington Senators, now the Twins, were even more terrible according to Elo, going 38-113 (the equivalent of a 121-loss modern 162-game season). Angels fans probably don’t look back on the 91-loss 1969 season too fondly, but, compared with the other franchises’ lousiest seasons ever, it’s not a bad low point, ranking just 279th-worst.So what will come in 2016? The Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds have had a rough start and could make a run at new Elo lows for their franchises. But the real team to watch is the Chicago Cubs, who have started the season at 24-6 with an incredible +102 run differential. It’s a hard pace to keep up, but if they do, the Cubs could make a run at becoming one of the greatest teams of all time.See the complete history of every MLB team.Check out our latest MLB predictions. –COL1993Colorado Rockies1444✓105 –MIL1969Seattle Pilots1443✓103 –TEX1973Texas Rangers143144 –MIA1993Florida Marlins1449✓146 –BAL1970Baltimore Orioles1600✓19 –HOU2013Houston Astros142535 –ARI2004Arizona Diamondbacks1449143 –SF1905New York Giants1601✓13 –PIT1953Pittsburgh Pirates141819 –ATL1911Boston Rustlers14149 –LAA1969California Angels1464279 –MIA2003Florida Marlins1537✓601 –MIN1904Washington Senators13871 The 1939 Yankees and 1906 Cubs are in a league of their own, more than 10 Elo points ahead of the other franchises. The Marlins have only been around since 1993, but it’s still sort of sad that their best team ever (World Series champions no less!) is just the 601st-best team ever. The Colorado Rockies, a franchise that was also born in 1993, are about as sad, but without the World Series rings. The San Diego Padres have had a much longer commitment to mediocrity; the franchise’s best team in its 47 seasons of existence comes in at No. 480. Fans of the Braves, Dodgers, Red Sox, Tigers, White Sox, Twins and Phillies may also be disappointed by their team’s position in this list.
