Budget carrier Ryanair has raised another ruckus with new cabin bag policies aimed at minimising delays and preventing time-consuming overhead bin battles.The low-cost airline had relaxed its carry-on allowance to permit customers to bring two bags into the cabin – a wheelie bag and a smaller bag such as laptop case — for free.But officials said the number of people taking advantage of the policy combined with limited overhead bin space and load factors of 97 per cent in August saw a slew of boarding and flight delays.In a move designed to speed up boarding, customers who have paid an extra €/£5 ($US5.98 to $US6.59) for priority boarding priority will be among the few allowed to bring two carry-on bags on to an aircraft from November 1.They will be joined by those travelling on Plus, Flexi Plus and Family Plus tickets,Other travellers will only be permitted to bring a smaller bag as carry on and their wheelie bags will have to travel in the hold.Ryanair has softened the blow by not charging for the wheelie bag service, which works well on smaller turboprop aircraft in other parts of the world.It has also increased its checked bag allowance from 15kg to 20kgs and dropped the fee for the heavier bag from €/£35 to €/£25 ($US29.90 to $US32.94).“These bag policy changes will cost Ryanair over €50m per annum in reduced checked bag fees,’’ Ryanair chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs said.“However, we believe offering bigger bags at reduced fees will encourage more customers to consider checking-in a bag, which will reduce the high volume of customers we have with two carry-on bags at the boarding gates, which is causing flight delays due to large numbers of gate bag and cabin bag offloads.”The reaction to the policy has been mixed, with some passengers denouncing the move as defacto cabin bag charge and accusing the airline of greed.Others, however, have welcomed a policy which would see an end to the bin bunfight.AER LINGUS OFFERS BASIC ECONOMYMeawhile, another Irish carrier, Aer Lingus, has become the latest legacy carrier to adopt so-called basic economy fares and will apply them to its trans-Atlantic services.As competition heats up at the Atlantic from LCCs such as Norwegian and Air France spinoff Joon, legacy airlines like Aer Lingus and British Airways are scrambling to adapt.BA is adding 52 seats to Boeing 777-200s flying across the Atlantic from next May in a bid to improve “capital efficiency’’ and keep seats costs comparable with competitors.Aer Lingus is taking a route similar to that taken by some US carriers by introducing a Saver economy fare.The Saver, touted as “the perfect option for those looking to travel light on direct flights between Ireland and North America”, isn’t completely bare bones.It includes 10kg (22lb) cabin baggage, in-flight entertainment and an on-board meal. Passengers pay for extras such as a checked bag, seat selection, a blanket or headphones.The airline’s Smart fare option includes all these things and is available to passengers who want to travel in the style to which they’ve become accustomed.
Employee absenteeism remains one of the most common workforce problems in today’s workplace.Absenteeism problems can range from employees not showing up without notifying their employer to using sick leave for vacation. Some abusers habitually use all of their paid time off every month.Many workplace absences are covered by federal laws like FMLA and ADA, but, for the nonprotected cases, employers should be swift and consistent with the administration of discipline.With technology and telecommuting policies allowing employees to work from anywhere, absenteeism is no longer defined as an employee not physically in the workplace, but as an employee who is “AWOL” or absent without login.Earlier this year, SHRM and Kronos conducted a study of the impact of employee absence on organizations and employees. According to Joyce Maroney, director of Workforce Institute at Kronos, “The holiday season is, of course, particularly hard hit with employee absences. We’ve done research on this topic before, though the emphasis has been largely on the financial impact of absence. This study, like the prior research, underscores the greater impact that unplanned absenteeism has on the bottom line.”Employee absenteeism can also harm workforce morale. Maroney says that “What we found was that the party affected most by unplanned absences seems to be colleagues, as the study shows that their perceived productivity loss is most affected (29.5% productivity loss for co-workers in the U.S.) Co-workers report feeling more stressed when their colleagues are out, especially when those absences are unplanned.”Organizations can’t avoid absences, but there are things they can do to lessen the impact, such as establishing a formal attendance policy and giving supervisors the training and support they need to administer it.How does absenteeism affect your organization and how do you manage it?Please join SHRM @weknownext at 3 p.m. ET on January 7 for a #Nextchat with special guest Joyce Maroney (@WF_Institute), director of the Workforce Institute at Kronos, and SHRM Researcher Karen Wessels (@SHRM_Research). They’ll discuss role reversal between marketing and IT, how they used martech to enhance and connect the customer journey, and how they established an entirely new discipline at the company under the martech banner.Steve Lok, the head of marketing and technology for global digital acquisition at The Economist, will explain how, as part of its personalization efforts, The Economist chose a customer data platform (CDP) and adopted a hub-and-spoke model to integrate its marketing technology stack. Customer profiles are built by integrating behavioral data (from website visits, email engagement and more), and then the company applies data science and machine learning to determine which messaging will work best with each customer at any given moment.Anuj Agrawal, the CMO at Earth Networks, will examine martech’s impact on two metrics – customer acquisition cost (CAC) and lifetime value (LTV). You’ll learn how your choice of segmentation impacts your ability to raise LTV, ways to customize the prospect experience to build value during the sales process, tricks during the new customer onboarding process to get them hooked, and intelligence-gathering techniques to expand your upsell rate.Bertrand Vandewiele, senior director of marketing at Philips North America, and Randy Delgado, senior director and global lead of strategy at CMG Partners, will share their case study of building a clear approach to global and regional technology investment, adopting agile principles to build quick test-and-learn sprints, and rapidly applying martech to identify over $15 million in e-commerce revenue potential.Ryan Kelly, VP marketing platform at GoDaddy, will share how they built a custom, state-of-the-art engagement platform that enabled the company to redefine its marketing strategy. New Delhi, Dec 12 (PTI) Cracking the whip on five of its State units, the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) today decided to ban them from taking part in the national championship, scheduled later this month, as a punishment for their lifters being caught for doping. Weightlifters from five State units — Services Sports Control Board, Delhi, Manipur, Haryana and Punjab — had earlier tested positive for banned substances across different competitions and hence are being stopped from participating in the upcoming tournament, to be held in Patiala from December 24 to 29. “We have banned Services Sports Control Board, Delhi, Manipur, Haryana and Punjab from taking part in the national championship because the weightlifters from these State units had earlier tested positive for doping,” IWF secretary general Sahdev Yadav told PTI. IWF earlier this year had imposed a year-long ban on four States — Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and Manipur — for returning highest number of dope cases. In April this year, the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) had caught 21 weightlifters in five championships for testing positive for banned substances. Out of those 21, 16 were from Delhi, Punjab and Haryana, who were caught at the National Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships, held in Yamunanagar in January. According to the IWF rules, in case of two or more doping violations in a 12-month period in tests conducted by the IWF or NADA, a state federation could be suspended from participating in any activities of the IWF for a period of up to two years. “There are two or more lifters who have tested positive for banned substances from these states units in the last one year or so and thats why we have decided not to allow them in the upcoming competition,” said Yadav. During the National Youth and Junior Championships, four lifters from Delhi, three from Punjab and two each from Haryana and Manipur had tested positive. PTI CM CMadvertisement
S Sreesanth gained partial relief from the turmoil he has been through in the last six years as the Supreme Court revoked the life ban imposed on him from cricket on Friday.The apex court gave the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) three months to decide afresh on the point of quantum of punishment for the fast bowler.Sreesanth, 36, was relieved after the SC order was read out by the bench, headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan, and hoped to hear the final judgement from the BCCI within two weeks.”I need cricket back, I do not think it will take BCCI 90 days to make the decision but I am grateful that the life ban has been removed. I fought my battle all by myself. My practice is going on and the road ahead totally depends on the selectors,” Sreesanth told reporters after the verdict.”It was a huge fight and the Supreme Court has given me a lifeline. There were so many opportunities where I was even going to announce my retirement, but thank god I didn’t. I have started staying fit to play the game, thanks to the T20 and T10 leagues, I can still earn my bread and butter somewhere,” he said.”I am not bothered by my fitness as I am inspired by Leander Paes and Ashish Nehra, they both kept on playing even after reaching the age of 36. New Delhi: The country’s pharmaceutical exports rose by 11 per cent to $19.2 billion in 2018-19, mainly driven by higher demand in regions such as North America and Europe, as per a commerce ministry data. The pharma exports in 2017-18 stood at $17.3 billion and $16.7 billion in the previous fiscal. North America constitutes about 30 per cent of Indian pharma exports, followed by Africa and the European Union with 19 per cent and 16 per cent share, respectively, according to the data.
