Kawashima fell to 30-6 (20 KOs).Mijares was promoted from interim champ to the official champ last month after ex-reigning champ Masamori Tokuyama decided to return the title he held for six years.“Kawashima is a great warrior so I knew it would be a tough fight,” Mijares said. “I will do my best to defend my title and aim for the higher weight classes.”Kawashima and Mijares got into several heated exchanges early on — the Japanese fighter delivering powerful body shots while Mijares hit Kawashima with a number of hard uppercuts. But the damage was too great in the 10th after Kawashima slipped to the canvas on Mijares’ right and he never recovered.“I’ve finally been knocked out. I’m very disappointed,” Kawashima said. “I know that I hit him with several hard punches. After the eighth round, I thought that I could win. . . .” Earlier, WBA super featherweight champion Edwin Valero of Venezuela stopped Mexican Michael Lozada in the first round.
