Men try to rob 9-year-old boy WHITTIER – Two men attempted to rob a 9-year-old boy behind Lee Owens Park on Wednesday afternoon, police said Friday. The men approached the boy and pretended to have a handgun, said Whittier police spokesman Jason Zuhlke. They looked through his pockets for valuables and left, he said. County to enforce fireworks laws In light of the upcoming Independence Day holiday, Supervisor Gloria Molina reminds county residents that all fireworks are illegal in county areas. That includes “safe and sane” fireworks sold at stands throughout surrounding cities such as Santa Fe Springs, Pico Rivera and La Mirada. Sheriff’s stations covering Molina’s district will be “vigorously enforcing” local and state fireworks laws, the supervisor said Friday. People caught with fireworks may be cited or even arrested. They face fines from a minimum of $300 to as much as $10,000, plus possible jail time of up to a year. Program urges youth employment SANTA FE SPRINGS – Employers are urged to hire local youths from the Youth in Industry Summer Employment Program. The program reimburses companies who employ youths through the program at $2.07 per hour. Students in the program work a maximum of 200 hours. They are available for full-time and part-time jobs. Three men with shaved heads took about $100 in cash from a vendor selling corn near Foxley and Villa drives at about 7 p.m., according to Whittier police Sgt. Tom Lamping.
