Last gasp goals are a great weapon says Falkirk assistant manager

first_imgFalkirk assistant manager James McDonaugh says his side’s habit of scoring stoppage time strikes has proved to be a vital weapon in their bid for promotion. The Bairns are on the brink of stepping up to the Scottish Premiership after beating Kilmarnock 1-0 in the first-leg play-off final on Thursday with a stoppage time winner. It’s the 10th time this season they’ve secured victory with goals after 90 minutes and Will Vaulks’ strike with the last kick of the ball has put them in the driving seat ahead of Sunday’s return leg. McDonaugh is delighted to see his side reap the rewards for fighting until the last whistle and says the belief it has given them is invaluable. Meanwhile, David McCracken admits winning promotion would be up there as one of the best achievements in his career. The defender sampled the joy with Wycombe Wanderers in 2009 when they finished third in England’s League Two just a year after failing to make the step up through the play-offs. He says this campaign feels different because Falkirk’s targets have continued to change and move forward as the season has progressed. “At the start of the season it was about making the play-offs,” he said. “People were talking about Rangers and Hibs and possibly St Mirren so there was that one other space. “We beat that by finishing second but throughout the season your targets change by how your position goes.” “There’s awareness of it now, especially in here that we are capable of scoring at any point in the game,” he said. “Even at half-time we keep saying ‘we go to the end, even if its 92 or 93 minutes, we go to the end.’ “It’s not an expectancy but we just know that we are capable of doing it, which is a great weapon to have in your armour. “It’s massive for the spirit, the mentality that it brings. To score at a point in the game where there’s almost no return… it’s massive for the players. “It’s just the belief they’ve got right now. It’s almost unstoppable at certain stages.” last_img
